5 Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Acne-Related Scar

When you have an acne breakout, did you know that acne scars are not the only thing that it may leave behind? One of the most unsightly blemishes that acnes may leave behind are scar of the skin, or rather – hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation, such a big word! Let’s put some explanation to it.

So in our skin, we have melanin, which is a type of scar that protects us from UV light damages. In general, people with a higher level of melanin have darker skin. What happens in hyperpigmentation is that the skin starts creating too much melanin in a particular area, causing that area to darken. Therefore hyperpigmentation simply means the darkening of only certain areas of our skin. This leaves behind  unpleasant discolored patches on our skin.

What causes these acne-related scar? It is actually due to the trauma done to our skin. When a pimple causes inflammation to our skin, our skin increases the amount of melanin it produces. This is a response to the injury it is receiving, this results in dark patches or spots on them. Although there are no serious health issues with these types of hyperpigmentation it is still a pain to have to deal with. The uneven skin tones and discolored patches on our skin can be frustrating to look at, especially if it’s on our face. But not to fear! We have some home remedies that may help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

What causes these acne-related scar? It is actually due to the trauma done to our skin.

The aim for these home remedies are to replenish or replace the hyperpigmented cells with new cells. To do so would involve acids and antioxidants that can be found in our normal household products. Dermatologists usually use the acids in chemical peels to remove the top layer of the skin so that the new skin that grows out is smoother. However those acids found in home remedies may have a milder effect but it will still help improve and reduce hyperpigmentation.

Milk And Yoghurt

Let’s start with one of the easiest ways to do so, just open your fridge to check if you have any milk or yoghurt, and that is all that you will need. The lactic acid in milk or yoghurt is a common ingredient found in chemical peels. Although they are lesser in quantity in milk or yoghurt as compared to chemical peels, it may help with mild or little hyperpigmentation.

yogurt

Yogurt is a popular home remedy for acne scar.

You can directly apply the milk or yoghurt to the pigmented area, let it sit for a few minutes then rinse thoroughly. Finish up with a touch of moisturizer to your skin. Repeat the process twice a day to help improve skin spots.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This popular household product has long been associated in the natural health community with its many health benefits. Apple cider vinegar contains both acids and antioxidants that can lighten unwanted pigmentation and at the same time protect skin cells.

apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been proven to be useful to lighten skin pigmentation, as well as for scalp health.

To apply this to your skin, mix 1 part apple cider vinegar and 1 part water to apply on pigmented area for a few minutes, twice a day. Rinse off thoroughly after that. You must always remember to dilute it well or it may irritate your skin further. Make sure to check for signs of irritation while using as well and stop if any of it appears.

Aloe Vera

The active ingredient found in aloe vera that helps reduce skin pigmentation is called aloesin or aloin. These are known as a natural depigmenting compound. Studies have shown that it can lighten skin and is a good natural non toxic treatment for hyperpigmentation

Apply the aloe vera gel on pigmented areas before bedtime and in the morning simply rinse it off with warm water. Repeat as required until skin color improves.

Green Tea

Green tea is well known for having one of the highest amounts of antioxidants in its tea leaves. The main compound that we want to look at here is the antioxidant known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), that could help prevent cells from going through pigmentation. Apart from that green tea also contains gallic acid and ellagic acid, both of which may help improve skin conditions.

Although more research is still required to fully support these theories, it’s still no harm giving them a go! For application try applying a soaked green tea bag onto any pigmented area for a few minutes each day.

Mulberry Leaves

Mulberry leaves contain active ingredients that can help block processes that cause pigmentation while at the same time disperses melamin. Soaking dried mulberry leaves then applying them to pigmented parts of your skin may provide results over time.

By soaking dried leaves smaller amounts of the active ingredients in Mulberry leaves will be exposed to your body, resulting in milder improvements.
