5 Simple Natural Remedies To Prevent Itchy and Dry Skin In Kids

Jia Hui Yo

It is actually a common occurrence for children to have dry skin. In fact some babies might even have it right after birth, especially if they are born after 40 weeks. However this is pretty normal and it will get better as time passes by.

A lot of other things can contribute to dry skin in children, such as bathing too often, the weather, humidity and even certain genetic diseases like eczema or having sensitive skin.

Dry skin is not necessarily red or itchy, they mostly appear as a flaky or rough patch on your child’s skin. Unfortunately if the skin continues to remain dry it may start to crack, bleed or get infected. This can be a painful experience for your child.

Eczema is also more likely to occur on dry skin. If the dry patch does start getting red or itchy, most likely eczema has started developing on that patch. Therefore our goal here is to reduce or prevent dryness so our children can have healthy glowing skin too.

Some Tips And Tricks To Prevent Dryness

A good way to start reducing dryness is to take note of your child’s bath time. Try reducing the frequency of baths and also if possible, limit each bath time to not more than 10 minutes. The bath water should also be lukewarm instead of hot, as hot water will dry up the skin, in turn making it itchy.

Always have a moisturizer on hand, especially if your child is going for activities such as swimming. It is important to rinse off the pool water and remember to moisturize before (make sure it has been fully absorbed by the skin before dipping in!) and after the swim. Products matter as well, so try to use fragrance-free, natural or non-irritating moisturizer. Coconut oil and olive oil is also a good substitute for cream based products in moisturizing your child’s skin.

Another way to reduce itching and irritation on your child’s skin is to dress them in cotton fabrics. Loose cotton clothings are both soft and soothing, the best kind for children. If there is any need at all to dress in synthetic clothings, you can always add a cotton layer under it as well.

Using Natural Remedies

Apart from these tips and tricks provided above, we would also like to share with you some simple natural remedies that can help soothe any itch or dry skin in children.

Breast Milk

This is good news for breastfeeding mothers! Breast milk actually has natural antibacterial and moisturizing properties in it. Apart from feeding and nourishing your baby, you can apply some on your baby’s dry skin as a moisturizer too.

Oatmeal

Oats contain anti-inflammatory properties and can also be used to remove and exfoliate dead skin. This simple ingredient can do an amazing job in keeping your child’s skin soft and moisturized. All you need to do is to put some oatmeal into muslin cloth and soak it in bath water for about 10 to 15 minutes. After that, simply use that water to bathe your child.

Avocado Paste

Most of us already know that avocados are one of those nutrient packed power fruits but did you know that it works great for the skin too? A safe (and some say tasty, but please don’t eat this paste after using it!) and natural ingredient to use for kids. Just mash the avocado and gently apply it to your child’s skin for 10 minutes then just wash it off. Easy peasy.

Aloe Vera

A well known plant that has soothing properties for the skin. Its antifungal and antibacterial properties make it a good moisturizer for skin. You can also easily plant them in your garden. For application simply cut a small piece of fresh aloe vera and gently massage it into your child’s skin (adults feel free to do the same to your own skin too!) .

Homemade Body Butter

If you’re feeling a little adventurous perhaps you would like to try creating your own body butter as moisturizers for your kids. Simply get your hands on some shea butter and mix them together with coconut oil and olive oil. Keep them in a small container and you have your moisturizer on the go!
